The Wall in the Middle of the Book by Jon Agee
In a world in which so many walls and barriers are being built, this picture book challenges the prejudices and assumptions people make about others and their often irrational and unfounded fears. A cheery character dressed in armour explains why the wall in the middle of the book protects the side of the book on which he lives and keeps it safe from a marauding ogre. However, readers can see that the situation is not as he describes. A book with a minimal text which would stimulate discussion with a wide range of readers.
It joins a small coterie of picture books (albeit with very different themes!) in which the gutter between the page is used to imaginative effect – see also Alfie Gets in First by Shirley Hughes and This book just ate my dog! by Richard Byrne.
