This online learning session is recorded to support a teacher to access it on demand for 30 days from the release date. It provides rich opportunity for practical engagement and reflection which will support implementation in the classroom.

This course was previously called 'Understanding Spelling in KS1'.

This introductory webinar is designed to build knowledge and understanding in how to teach spelling effectively to children from EYFS to Year 2.

A range of strategies and approaches are introduced, based on proven classroom practice and research from the CLPE publication Understanding Spelling. Teachers are introduced to recent and relevant examples of a range of quality children's literature that build a repertoire of vocabulary, create connections and provide spelling models.

What you will learn:

  • An introduction to the context of the English spelling system, including a brief history of English language development.
  • Evidence-based classroom environments, practice and provision that enable children in these early stages of development to learn to spell effectively.
  • The role that a rich reading curriculum plays in ensuring that children become confident and effective spellers in a range of different contexts.
  • How to introduce a classroom culture of curiosity and collaboration in which learners are confident to take an investigative approach to spelling within a rich reading curriculum.

All elements of the training are in line with the requirements of the National Curriculum.

This webinar is part of a two-session package of webinars which provide participants with an introduction to the CLPE approach to teaching spelling across KS1 and KS2. Schools can either book leaders on to both sessions for a complete overview, or book individual teachers on to the sessions that applies to the phase they teach.

What you will receive:

  • 30 days access to the recorded webinar
  • a handout of the presentation slides and access to a recording of the webinar.
  • free teaching notes to support immediate implementation in the classroom.

Webinar price is per person. Participants receive a pre-notification email three days before the training date. The recording will be released on the release date outlined on the website.
