This online learning session is recorded to support a teacher to access it on demand for 30 days from the release date. It provides rich opportunity for practical engagement and reflection which will support implementation in the classroom.

Explore the key experiences and teaching approaches that support writers in Year 5 and 6.

What you will learn:

  • the contexts which support children in Years 5 and 6 to build reader identity and to be engaged and motivated to read for purpose and pleasure across the curriculum;
  • how to choose and use quality texts to support the development of skilled reading behaviours and strategies, inference and deduction, visual literacy, exploration of written language, authorial intent and intertextuality;
  • teaching approaches that support children to read an increasing range of literary forms with independence, fluency and stamina and provide experiences which deepen reader response and comprehension;
  • how to select texts to meet the needs, interests and literary preferences of children in Years 5 and 6, broadening their reading experiences.

All elements of the training are in line with the requirements of the National Curriculum.

This is the first of a series of four Teaching Reading online learning sessions. Teachers and leaders might attend one or all four to embed consistency of practice from Nursery to Year 6.

What you will receive:

  • 30 day access to a recording of the online session;
  • a handout of the presentation slides;
  • a free Power of Reading teaching sequence as well as a free 'Take 5' home learning resource, supporting immediate implementation at school.

Online learning session price is per person.

Participants receive a pre-registration email three days before the release date with details on how to access the online learning session. If you need support, please email [email protected].

I enjoyed discussing text material and I am grateful for the pointers on updated UK expectations and requirements from the Department of Education. What I found most beneficial was to hear other teachers' perspectives and ideas. I was able to write down a lot of new ideas or ideas that came to mind by listening to either the presenter or the participants.

Participant 2024

Practical ideas that can be successfully implemented in the classroom. Quality texts that children would be interested in. The range of books covered was fantastic. I find it hard to find modern books children can relate to and a variety of resources were provided.

Participant 2023

Excellent book recommendations which fit well with our curriculum choices. The presenter was very helpful and stuck around to answer all our questions at the end too.
