Phonics and Early Reading for KS2

In this two hour, online session, participants will develop subject knowledge in the teaching, use and application of phonics, whichever validated scheme your school has decided to use.  This will include an overview of the core features of an effective systematic phonics programme and the associated subject knowledge, terminology and practice that runs across all validated schemes and how to support children in Key Stage 2 who need further focus on phonics.

This session will focus on the early reading needs of children in Key Stage 2, supporting teachers to identify gaps in learners’ phonic knowledge and early reading skills and strategies and support their progress.

All elements of the training are in line with the requirements of the new Reading Framework and the National Curriculum.

What will participants gain? 

  • An understanding of how phonic knowledge develops throughout Early Years and KS1 to support decoding.
  • Exploring the key terminology, skills and strategies that Early Readers need to develop and make progress.
  • How to choose and use quality children’s literature to support children who further support with phonics and Early Reading in KS2.

We will explore how to revisit and revise elements of early phonological awareness that target specific areas that relate to early reading, such as rhyme, alliteration and oral blending and segmenting,

We will look at how to revisit the basic code, and develop children’s skills of listening to, discriminating and vocalising phonemes, blending and segmenting by looking at consonant clusters at the beginnings and ends of words, with the needs of KS2 early readers in mind.

We will then go on to explore the complexities of the English spelling system, looking at the complex code and how to develop children’s knowledge of alternative grapheme-phoneme representations and alternative pronunciations for known graphemes to develop skilled word reading and greater accuracy in spelling.

We will also explore ways in which to support children to use and apply these skills in the context of quality texts targeted specifically at KS2 early readers and rich and purposeful writing opportunities.
