This one-day course is designed to build expertise in how to teach writing in Year 5 and 6.

It provides subject knowledge in how to ensure progress and achievement in writing through the development of knowledge, skills, attitudes and experience. Particular attention is given to the role of reading and engaging with high-quality children’s literature in determining writer identity, ensuring quality writing outcomes and building a writing community.

This course is one of four Teaching Writing courses tailored to the needs of children in Nursery to Year 6, meaning teachers can undertake one course on its own or leaders might attend all four courses to embed consistency of practice throughout their school.

You will learn:

  • how to use CLPE's Writing Scale to understand and support the progress and achievement of writers at this stage of their development;
  • how to inspire rich and relevant contexts for writing that will motivate your own writers, build writing experience across a range of genres, and shape a thriving writing community;
  • creative teaching approaches that support children to write independently and with increasing confidence throughout a planned writing process - language and vocabulary acquisition, building of imaginative ideas, drafting, genuine reflection and editing, and publication;
  • how to work with quality texts in depth to build understanding of how to teach grammar in context; how written language is crafted by an author to affect a reader response - and how to support children to explore register, style and language choices in their own writing with purpose and audience in mind;
  • how to teach phonic and spelling knowledge so that children use and apply it in meaningful writing contexts;
  • how to develop motor skills and encourage legibility, fluency and stamina.

What participants will receive:

As well as a full day training and lunch, all participants will receive a high-quality children's book and planning notes to help put the strategies from the course into practice in the classroom.

Participants will receive joining instructions for the course one week before the training date. If you have any queries, please email [email protected].

TESTIMONIALS

The course was a great way to network with other professionals and develop my knowledge of what CLPE offers. It also helped me to think about the journey that a writer takes and how we can promote some of the strategies that we already use, so that children develop a love of vocabulary and writing for different purposes. As English Lead, I will now be working with colleagues who have/are attending the other courses, to develop a whole school approach to writing.

Course Participant 2023

The course gave me a range of strategies that I can use in the classroom.
