Enhance  knowledge and understanding in how to teach writing to children in Year 1 and 2 by using literacy strategies specific to Key Stage 1 and in line with the requirements of the National Curriculum.

This one-day course is designed by experts in Key Stage 1,  providing subject knowledge in how to ensure progress and achievement in writing through the development of crucial knowledge, skills, attitudes and experience. Particular attention will be given to choosing and using high-quality children’s literature to support the needs and interests of children, inspire a range of meaningful writing opportunities and foster a community of  confident, competent young writers.

This course is one of four Teaching Writing courses tailored to the needs of children in Nursery to Year 6, meaning teachers can undertake one course on its own or attend all four courses to embed consistency of practice throughout their school.

What you will learn:

  • Understand how writing develops from the beginning and how to support progress and achievement in Key Stage 1;
  • The writing practices that shape a community of writers in which young children are curious, engaged and motivated to write collaboratively, individually and independently;
  • How to choose and use quality texts to exemplify authentic writing voices, provide language models, enrich vocabulary and inspire opportunities for writing;
  • The teaching approaches that best support an authentic writing process, including language and vocabulary acquisition, building of imaginative ideas, composition, reflection and publication;
  • A range of strategies and approaches that support children to use and apply grammar knowledge in the context of real writing experiences;
  • How to support early writers to write across a range of forms with purpose and audience in mind;
  • How to enable children to use and apply growing phonic and spelling knowledge to segment and spell words in real contexts;
  • A range of strategies and approaches that develop gross and fine motor skills and encourage legibility, fluency and stamina;
  • Understand how to develop competency and confidence in writing from Key Stage 1 into Year 3.

What participants will receive:

As well as a full day training and lunch, all participants will receive a high-quality children's book and planning notes to help put the strategies from the course into practice in the classroom.

Participants will receive joining instructions for the course one week before the training date. If you have any queries, please email courses@clpe.org.uk.

Emphasised the importance of planning English lessons around a high quality text and gave me a wealth of ideas on how to do this effectively. Great choice of text to go through as a group, and one which I am definitely going to use in my own planning.

Course Participant 2023

Lots of planning and teaching ideas I can use and use this as a teaching sequence across a unit. Learnt lots of creative and engaging writing approaches and how it is important for children to develop a positive attitude to writing and to celebrate their progress as well as ensuring ownership of their own ideas to motivate and encourage them to write.

Course Participant 2023

I now have a greater understanding of how a reader develops in to a writer and the great importance of reading a variety of texts to children to expose them to varying vocabulary. I also learnt new strategies to teach writing.

Course Participant 2023

..it will improve your knowledge and help you to improve as a teacher. Forget what you thought you knew about inspiring children to write because this has it all.

Course Participant 2023

A great way to re-inspire you teaching of writing and how to make it accessible for all.
