Meeting the Needs of Children with English as an Additional Language
This two day training will demonstrate the essential strategies and approaches for supporting children with English as an additional language in a rich literacy curriculum. This two day course will draw upon best practice and will give participants the confidence and skills to support children with EAL in the classroom.
Participants will gain knowledge and understanding of the stages of language acquisition and how best to support children at varying stages of language development drawing on the CLPE/Hilary Hester Scales.

English Subject Leaders, EAL Coordinators, Early Years, Key Stage 1 and 2 Teachers and Teaching Assistants.
What you will learn:
This two day course has been designed by our team of expert teachers and will explore the stages of language acquisition and the implications for teaching and learning within each stage. Attendees will have the opportunity to:
- Consider the needs of newly arrived children in the early stages of acquiring English as an Additional Language (EAL) and how best to meet these.
- Reflect on the importance of valuing, recognising and celebrating identity in the context of the EAL learner and provide strategies and approaches to ensuring this.
- Review provision.
- Consider the needs of children as they move through the different stages of language acquisition and how best to meet these.
What participants will receive?
As well as two full days training, all participants will receive an extensive resource pack to support implementation of ideas from the course in the classroom.
Attendees will be provided with a range of ideas, strategies and approaches for supporting children with English as an Additional Language within a rich literacy curriculum.
