This course was previously called 'Teaching Phonics to Support Reading and Writing'

Explore how to develop subject knowledge in the teaching, use and application of phonics to support reading and writing, whichever validated scheme your school has decided to use.

What you will learn:

  • practice that ensures that children have the knowledge and skills to read with increased fluency, a greater depth of comprehension and the motivation to read for pleasure independently, and to have the ideas, imagination and motivation to write for a range of purposes with increased fluency and spelling accuracy.
  • how to develop subject knowledge in the effective teaching of phonics based on the latest evidence and research.
  • an understanding of early phonological development and how to ensure that children have the foundations of literacy for a taught programme of phonics to be successful.
  • a systematic approach to the teaching of phonics and wider word recognition strategies, using books and teaching approaches which develop children’s language, vocabulary and engagement with reading and writing.

All elements of the training are in line with the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework, the Reading Framework and National Curriculum.

This course will include evidence and learning from CLPE’s latest publication The Balancing Act: Teaching Phonics, Reading and Writing, written by our Learning and Programme Director, Charlotte Hacking, in collaboration with Professor Dominic Wyse from University College London (UCL), due for publication in June 2024.

What you will receive:

  • two full days training, refreshments and lunch;
  • a handout of the presentation slides and access to a shared folder of teaching resources;
  • two carefully selected book packs of high-quality texts and associated teaching resources to support immediate implementation in the classroom.

Participants will receive joining instructions for the course one week before the training date. If you have any queries, please email [email protected].

TESTIMONIALS

It gave me the opportunity to consider a variety of story books and poems to support phonic lessons, alongside our current scheme, as well as to support writing across the key stages.

Teacher on Teaching Phonics to Support Reading and Writing, 2024

I think the learning will significantly impact my students - especially a balanced approach where my students are struggling with the needs they have. Using engaging literature and incorporating fun elements will impact engagement.
