Developing Writing: Building Knowledge and Skills in Key Stage 1

This course was previously called 'Teaching Writing in Years 1 and 2'.

Explore the key experiences and teaching approaches that support writers in Years 1 and 2.

What you will learn:

• what to expect of writers at this stage of their writing journey and how to support progress and achievement in KS1;
• how to inspire rich and relevant contexts for writing that will motivate your own writers, build writing experience across a range of genres, and shape a thriving writing community;
• how to choose and use quality texts to exemplify authentic writing voices and forms, provide language models, enrich vocabulary and inspire opportunities for writing as part of an authentic writing process;
• how to enable children to use and apply growing phonic and spelling knowledge to segment and spell words in the context of real writing experiences;
• strategies and approaches that develop gross and fine motor skills and encourage legibility, fluency and stamina.

All elements of the training are in line with the requirements of the National Curriculum.

This one-day course is one of four Teaching Writing courses tailored to the needs of children from Nursery to Year 6. Leaders might undertake one course on its own or attend all four courses to embed consistency of practice throughout their school.

• a handout of the presentation slides;
• a high-quality text and associated Power of Reading teaching sequence to support immediate implementation in the classroom.
