Supporting English in the Primary Years for Teaching Assistants

This course will support teaching assistants to develop an understanding of the expectations for English throughout the primary years. They will look at the development of spoken language and its crucial role in reading and writing, Develop ways to support children’s reading comprehension and consider practical strategies that are effective in supporting children’s developing literacy.

Teaching Assistants will:

• Explore the fundamental role talk plays in developing children as confident readers and writers

• Develop strategies to support children’s reading comprehension

• Use talk and reading to develop an understanding of the purpose, audience and forms for writing

• Investigate how to create purposeful talk, reading and writing opportunities in a unit of work, based around a high quality text, supporting children to be confident speakers, listeners, readers and writers.

Participants will receive new rich and meaningful activities for supporting children’s talk, reading and writing and a bank of resources to use in school, including a high quality text.
