The Power of the Picture Book for Teaching Mathematics in KS1

Explore successful learning in mathematics and take part in a practical activities that support the development, understanding and use of mathematical language and problem solving in real-life contexts. This course will also focus on children’s mathematical recording and how to create a supportive environment for mathematics, developing learning effectively from EYFS.

Participants will:

• Become familiar with picture books that support mathematical concepts and understanding in Key Stage 1

• Explore practical mathematics activities which enable children to use and apply mathematical concepts, strategies and language in real life, meaningful situations, linked to focus texts

• Explore the development of visual images as tools for thinking and recording learning in mathematics

Participants will gain:

• The opportunity to reflect on and develop practice in KS1 mathematics in line with the expectations of National Curriculum 2014

• Ideas for practical activities designed to bring maths learning alive in real life situations, with high-quality picture books as a starting point

• An audit of indoor and outdoor provision to develop mathematical learning

• A high quality text to use in the classroom
