Valuing Children’s Independent Reading Choices: Finding the Funny, Books that Tickle Our Fancy.

This Literacy Library Presents evening is all about the funny books that appeal to children and why they are an important part of a rich reading diet.

CLPE’s Farrah Serroukh and Charlotte Hacking will share CLPE’s most recent research into children’s choices as independent readers and why illustration and humour appeal to children. We will also look at how available these books are for a range of readers and look at the sophistication and depth of understanding that quality texts in this genre can offer to children and why they are an important part of children’s reading experience.

This will be followed by a panel discussion with bestselling authors Konnie Huq and Tom McLaughlin, where they will discuss the importance and power of humour in children's literature and share insights into their inspirations, their creative processes and the appeal of the genre for them as writers and for their readers.

All participants will receive a free copy of the CLPE pamphlet ‘Reading for Pleasure: What we Know Works.’

Registration and arrival: 6.30pm

Event: 7.00pm

Tickets for this event are £7.50 for non-Power of Reading Members and £5 for Members (email [email protected] to get the discount code).

Books will be available to buy on the night from Tales on Moon Lane and the authors will be available for signing after the event.

About Konnie Huq
Konnie Huq is one of Britain’s most loved presenters. She was Blue Peter’s longest serving female presenter from 1997-2008 and since then has gone on to present shows including The Xtra Factor, King of the Nerds and London Talking to name a few. She is also a brilliant interviewer, having given J.K. Rowling her first ever interview in 1997 and Malala and Ziauddin Yousafzai at Central Hall Westminster on the publication of Ziauddin's book, Let Her Fly.

In 2018, Konnie signed a 3 book deal for a children’s series with Piccadilly Press. This will be her first foray into children’s books and the main character is inspired by Konnie’s own London Bangladeshi background and her love of science and being a bit nerdy. She is currently an ambassador for the Princes’ Trust and the British Asian Trust.

About Tom McLaughlin
Before becoming a writer and illustrator Tom spent nine years working as political cartoonist for The Western Morning News thinking up silly jokes about even sillier politicians. Then, in 2004
Tom took the plunge into illustrating and writing his own books. Since then he has written and illustrated picture books as well as working on animated TV shows for Disney and Cartoon
Network. Tom lives in Devon and his hobbies include drinking tea, looking out of the window, and biscuits. His hates include spiders, running out of biscuits, and writing biographies.
