Excellence in Literacy for NQTs: Teaching Reading
This specialist one day course is part our Excellence in Literacy for NQTs programme, and has a focus on reading.
What you will learn
This course provides Newly Qualified Teachers with essential subject knowledge and understanding of how to support children’s progress and development in reading. The course is highly practical and investigates ways to plan well-chosen activities to support children’s progress in all aspects of reading, using high-quality children’s literature.
What participants will receive?
Participants will receive a resource pack containing related reading to deepen their subject knowledge; auditing tools to support text choice; and a children’s book with detailed planning to support immediate implementation of exemplified approaches back in the classroom
During the day, participants will have the opportunity to:
- Develop a classroom culture of reading for pleasure in which children are taught reading skills and strategies through rich reading provision, including:
- Reading aloud
- Reading in a group
- Individual reading
- Independent reading
- Look at the role high quality texts play in supporting engagement and reading for purpose and pleasure.
- Develop subject knowledge in how children progress in reading and build on this to explore approaches which enable learners to develop fluency and comprehension.
