Effective Spelling in a Rich Reading Curriculum

This course will explore a range of strategies and resources to enhance spelling attainment of all children based on the research from the CLPE publication Understanding Spelling. It will make teachers think about their current spelling approach looking at strategies and approaches to improve and enhance this teaching to ensure children become confident, effective spellers, in line with the requirements of the National Curriculum.
Who should attend?
Primary Teachers in any year group and English subject leads
What you will learn:
- How children learn to spell effectively and the implications of this for teaching practice.
- How to develop classroom literacy environments and routines in order to support all children to learn to spell effectively.
- A brief history of spelling to allow participants to know the background of spelling to understand how to teach it effectively.
- How to improve your spelling practise in your school or classroom.
What participants will receive?
Participants on this course will receive a copy of CLPE’s highly acclaimed publication Understanding Spelling giving the participants access to the research this course is based on.
Participants will gain an understanding of the spelling process and how learning to spell develops for children at different stages. They will be able to adapt classroom cultures and practices to best support children as developing spellers and be able to contextualise the teaching of spelling in a literature rich context. Teachers will become more confident in their knowledge of spelling and therefore will be able to teach their children in a more enthusiastic, enjoyable and confident way.
