Developing the Role of the English Subject Leader

This 6 day course is ideal for Subject Leaders, both those new to the post and existing. Teachers will hear from a range of keynote speakers, drawing on their experiences as practicing experts. Teachers will receive an anthology of related reading and three key theoretical texts to deepen their subject knowledge and provide opportunities for reflection. The price of this course has been reduced and now costs just £165 per day.

English Subject Leaders will:

  • Explore relevant research and best practice to help build an effective vision and curriculum for English
  • Develop a clear and inclusive vision for English across their whole school
  • Gain a clear understanding of what progress in Reading and Writing looks like
  • Understand the relationship between reading, talk and writing and how to plan for this across the curriculum
  • Be supported in building a vision for learning and progress across their school
  • Be empowered to effectively monitor, evaluate and build on practice to raise the engagement and attainment of all learners
  • Identify how to support their staff to move learning on for pupils

Day one: Shaping a Vision for English

English Subject Leaders will:

  • Consider their own action plan and school data and to set priorities for the coming year
  • Explore the CLPE Reading and Writing Scales as a tool to develop provision that ensures best practice
  • Begin to create a vision for English for their own setting

Day two: Early Literacy Development

English Subject Leaders will:

  • Explore how to identify and support pupils at the early stages of literacy
  • Investigate best practice and inclusive approaches
  • Reflect on intervention practices

Day three: Developing an Effective Curriculum - Reading focus

English Subject Leaders will:

  • Explore how to translate their vision into practice
  • Consider how to develop quality first teaching in reading 
  • Reflect on the whole school reading curriculum

Day four: Developing an Effective Curriculum: Writing focus

English Subject Leaders will:

  • Explore how to translate their vision into practice
  • Consider how to develop quality first teaching in writing 
  • Reflect on the whole school writing curriculum

Day five: The Reader in the Writer

English Subject Leaders will:

  • Consider how teachers can bring reading and writing together effectively in the teaching of English
  • Investigate how to monitor the quality of the curriculum through lesson study
  • Explore writing moderation

Day six: Reflection and Forward Planning 

English Subjects Leaders will:

  • Present a case study to share aspects of the course they have been developing in their schools
  • Forward plan considering priorities for the upcoming year
  • Consider ways to enrich the English curriculum
