Sadness
Sometimes sadness will find you.
It will come to you at dinner or in school,
or after you lose a friend or someone you love.
It will call you from places
where you don’t expect it.
It will make you feel cold
and small and unloved.
When it does,
take its hand.
Tell it that it is okay
to feel small sometimes.
Cry with it and decide together
that it is okay to break sometimes.
Everyone breaks.
Even the ocean.
Even the storm.
When it has told you
everything it needs to,
it will leave.
Remember to gently close
the door after its shadow.
Remember you are still whole,
even after you have broken for a while.
Remember you are still loved,
the same way people still love
the oceans and the storm.
Because no matter how many times
they break, they always
become whole again.
Just like you.
