Poetry at CLPE
CLPE is the National Poetry Centre for Primary Schools. We hold a full collection of published children's poetry at our centre library and an archive collection of historical poetry. We are a partner of National Poetry Day. The theme for 2023 was Refuge with the Primary Stage resources produced by CLPE in collaboration with NPD. Resources from previous National Poetry Days are available below.
Poetry Training and Research
We also run a full year of training programmes around the subject of poetry. Our Poetry in Primary School Survey 2023 showed that there are many teachers who have never had CPD or training in poetry and we are committed to providing this for you. View further CLPE poetry research. We produce a publication Poetry in Primary Schools -What We Know Works, (updated in 2023) which shows what we have learned from working with teachers and children on our training and research programmes about teaching poetry in primary schools.
Poetry Teaching Resources
Additionally we provide FREE poetry teaching resources which are available on the website. These include poems, teaching sequences, videos from poets performing poetry and speaking about their work and processes as poets and videos of children's performances. CLPE is also responsible for the CLiPPA, the only annual poetry award solely presented for published children's poetry, which has a shadowing scheme for schools running alongside it, giving children the chance to enjoy and perform poems from the CLiPPA shortlist. The winners of this prestigious competition are invited to perform on stage at the award ceremony, alongside the shortlisted poets.
