Win with CLPE and Walker Books in a competition to celebrate the stunning new book from Laura Dockrill and Lauren Child: Grey.

What is the Competition?

Walker Books and the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE) are launching a competition to celebrate the publication of Grey by Laura Dockrill and illustrated by Lauren Child, a brand new iconic picturebook collaboration about feelings and acceptance from two of the most beloved voices in children's literature.

The book sensitively explores feelings and emotions, in a story full of empathy and understanding that will provide comfort and hope to readers of all ages.

The challenge we are setting you and your children is to work independently or collaboratively to devise a picturebook spread that uses words and illustration to explore, express and connect with emotions.

Full guidance including teaching resources to introduce the book and task and downloadable images of the front cover and a key spread from the book can be accessed via the links below.

Why should our school enter?

This competition gives children an invaluable opportunity to be inspired by a real-life author and one of the UK’s most celebrated and prolific illustrators to come up with their own ideas for writing and illustration. They will have the chance to follow an authentic writing process, coming up with, playing with and crafting ideas and reflecting on the impact of their work before publishing for an audience of their own. They will have the opportunity to think the way that a writer thinks, use their own unique ideas and voices and to consider the links between the text and illustration in a picturebook. They will learn how to craft and shape writing and illustration and feel the satisfaction of publishing for an audience.

What is the prize?

There is also an incredible prize for the winning spread! This is comprised of a copy of this stunning new book for your children to enjoy and a place for a teacher on CLPE’s Power of Pictures training programme for which Lauren Child, one of CLPE's patrons, is an ambassador for.

This prize will provide two and a half days of training, working alongside author/illustrator Yijing Li, supporting the development of children's visual literacy, reading comprehension and creative writing skills, enabling children to learn about narrative structure and character development in an accessible way to create writing of their own. Lauren Child is a patron of CLPE and an ambassador for the Power of Pictures. You will need to ensure that a member of staff is free to attend the training at CLPE on 25th April, 23rd May and 4th July, 2024.

Who can enter?

A school can submit entries from any children from the ages of 5-11. The guidance below gives ideas for how to support children of all ages in creating their competition entries. This should take place over approximately three sessions to give children time to complete finished artworks and will be inspired by the front cover and a key spread from the book.

You can submit as many entries as you like, but make sure these are competition ready, as they will be judged to select a winner.

When do we need to submit our entries by?

The competition closes at 12pm on 18th April 2024. The winning entry will be announced on the 19th April 2024 and the winner will be informed to take up their place on the training programme.
