New! Power of Pictures training with Yijing Li

Our next award-winning Power of Pictures training has been announced!

Join author/illustrator Yijing Li Power of Pictures training in April to find out how this programme will develop your knowledge of visual literacy and improve reading fluency, comprehension and creative writing in your classroom. The training will focus on Yijing's stunning debut picture book, Through the Forest.

Winner of the Teach Primary Best CPD Award 2022, this programme was originally devised by CLPE’s Charlotte Hacking and author/illustrator and CLPE Patron, Ed Vere in 2013.

Over 2.5 days, participants will learn how working with picture books across the primary years supports the development of all children as readers and writers with a greater depth of understanding about the writing process.

The training was independently evaluated by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) and found that the programme had a positive effect on children’s writing self-efficacy and writing creativity, closing the gap between disadvantaged pupils and their peers and had a substantial impact on children who traditionally may have struggled to engage in literacy activities.

This evaluation proved that:

  • Pupils who received the Power of Pictures programme had, on average, higher writing scores (equivalent to one month of additional progress) as compared to children in the control group.
  • Among children eligible for free school meals (FSM), those in schools that PoP was delivered in also made one additional month’s progress.
  • Children in PoP schools had higher writing self-efficacy (equivalent to two months additional progress) and writing creativity (ideation) scores than those from schools in which the programme was not taught.
  • Teachers reported high levels of engagement with the programme not only from the pupils and themselves, but also from the senior leadership teams at their schools.
