The Worm and the Bird by Coralie Bickford-Smith
A worm’s-eye view of the world is central to this exquisitely designed picture book. The worm’s words as it wends its way through the soil to the surface are conveyed in a simple patterned text carefully placed on the pages. At intervals throughout the book the perspective changes as the reader views a bird perched patiently on the handle of a garden tool until the converging moment in the lives of both creatures arrives. A book that illustrates philosophically the beauty and cruelty of nature in pictures that use a limited colour palette to great effect.
Coralie Bickford-Smith’s first picture book The Fox and the Star was just as beautifully produced as this one and was adopted as the central text on a CLPE Inspiring Writing course and is a CLPE Core Book.
