Beyond the Bright Sea by Lauren Wolk

A haunting and reflective second novel from a writer whose first book is on the CILIP Carnegie Medal shortlist.

Crow has lived on an island of the coast of Massachusetts all her life, brought up by Osh who found her floating in the sea in an old boat as a baby. She becomes curious about her origins and this is a story about seeking identity, understanding who you are, and about acceptance. There are mysteries surrounding Crow and the other main characters – Osh and their neighbour Miss Maggie - some of which are resolved wholly or partially but not always, as in real life. Crow is a resourceful child who is both thoughtful and impulsive.

As in Wolf Hollow, the local environment is very effectively evoked as are the minutiae of people’s lives while still maintaining a well paced plot.
