I Am Henry Finch

This story about the coming to consciousness of a small bird is the third collaboration between picture book creators Alexis Deacon and Viviane Schwarz, following A Place to Call Home and Cheese Belongs to You. A variety of visual techniques are employed in all three but what they have in common is a deceptively simple text which, combined with distinctive illustrations, can be revisited many times and provoke lots of discussion. The bodies of Henry and his fellow finches are formed in the pictures by means of thumbprints coloured red with feet and facial features added in black. The colours red and black are maintained until Henry meets a blue Beast.
