Asterix the Gaul

Author: Goscinny
Illustrator: Uderzo
Publisher: Orion
Translator: Anthea Bell; Derek Hockridge

The first book about the plucky little Gaul whose village is holding out against the might of the Roman Empire. Not an easy read in terms of vocabulary, and the humour is based on, at times, quite subtle wordplay. However, comic strip books often provide great motivation for reluctant readers and teach us about different ways of reading. An early and important example of the rapidly expanding medium of graphic books.

There are more than thirty Asterix books, the most recent being: Asterix and the Chieftain's Daughter (9781510107144), Orion £7.99.
