Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson

Brown Girl Dreaming.jpg

This is the life story of this black American author in the style of a verse novel beginning with her birth in 1963. During the course of this beautifully written book readers get to know her extended family within the wider context of African American history. Jacqueline Woodson’s evolution as a writer is a strong thread throughout.

It has just been announced that Jacqueline Woodson is the recipient of the 2018 Astrid Memorial Award so I’m taking this opportunity to highlight this book which has won multiple awards in the USA but sadly, like other books by this author, is not published in the UK. There is a Power of Reading teaching sequence for her verse novel Locomotion.

Brown Girl Dreaming is included in CLPE’s Black History Month booklist, intended for use all the year round.
