Skyward: The Story of Female Pilots in WWII

Author: Sally Deng
Illustrator: Sally Deng
Publisher: Flying Eye

Sally Deng explores the role of women pilots during World War 2 in this narrative about Hazel, Marlene and Lilya, living in the USA, England and Russia respectively. She describes their childhood interest in flight and how they each came to be pilots during the war, fulfilling roles that had hitherto not been available to women. The illustrations have an appropriately retro feel and are full of interesting details. The book is described as ‘creative non-fiction’, being based on real events and people with some elements of the story and aspects of the characters being fictionalised to some extent. A bibliography gives details of several books that can be consulted to find out more.
