Planet Omar: Accidental Trouble Magnet

Author: Zanib Mian
Illustrator: Nasaya Mafaridik
Publisher: Hodder

A fun packed illustrated novel about a loveable, relatable boy with a cheeky sense of humour supported by a great cast of characters. Omar introduces readers to his family and his new school where he makes friends but also faces problems with his classmate Daniel’s racist remarks. Neighbour Mrs Rogers also has some prejudiced views about Muslims at first.

Omar relates his experiences in a humorous tone and the comic drawings are integrated with the text. There is a universality about the way he describes his life with which many young readers will identify. However, the author adeptly weaves in details that are distinctive to the lived experiences of young Muslim readers, from the everyday to more challenging aspects.
