Pirate Diary

Author: Richard Platt
Illustrator: Chris Riddell
Publisher: Walker

This book is currently unavailable.

A fictitious journal, kept during 1716 to 1717, by Jake Carpenter a doctor’s son in the American colonies, who signs on as a sailor on a brig called the Greyhound, bound for Martinique. The voyage is an eventful one, as the ship is boarded by pirates.

Notes at the end provide contextual information about piracy, and there is a combined glossary and index. The humorous illustrations in this large format picture book complement and add information to the text, for example a cutaway diagram of the ship.
