The Matchbox Diary

Author: Paul Fleischman
Illustrator: Bagram Ibatoulline
Publisher: Walker

A man shares the story of his early life with his great-granddaughter. Before he was able to read and write, he found an inventive way of keeping a diary by preserving objects that were reminders of significant times in a series of matchboxes. The story of a family's early twentieth century migration from Italy to America unfolds as each object is revealed and examined. Alongside the delicate detail of each object is a bigger picture in the style of a framed sepia photograph. Eventually the barely literate boy became someone who brought a love of the printed word to others.
