Journey to the River Sea

Author: Eva Ibbotson
Publisher: Macmillan

An orphan girl, Maia, leaves her boarding school in England in 1910 to stay with distant relatives who live on a rubber plantation on the banks of the Amazon in Brazil. Although her new life is not all she expected, she soon finds herself in an enthralling adventure centred on the ‘River Sea’. The novel has memorable characters, a beautifully described setting and explores a number of themes including following your dreams, having a positive outlook and sense of responsibility, together with ideas concerning respect, prejudice, class and culture.
