Hortense and the Shadow
Hortense has an intense hatred for her shadow and the way in which it shifts and changes. She takes action to rid herself of its presence but, when danger threatens, finds out in an unexpected way how vital it is. The storytelling style and the setting portrayed in the pictures draw on the Polish heritage of the two sisters who created this picture book. A limited colour palette is used effectively to evoke ‘the dark and wolfish woods’ where Hortense appears to live alone. The illustrations are a combination of single page illustrations, double page spreads and perfectly placed vignettes.
