Farmer Duck

It may not be commonly recognised by children that a duck is female; but unless this is appreciated the feminist message of this picture book will be lost. Whilst the lazy farmer stays in bed, little Farmer Duck does all the work in the house and on the farm. ‘“How goes the work?” “Quack”’ is the only dialogue apart from Moo, Baa and Cluck when the animals have united to evict the farmer and help Farmer Duck with the work. A perfect picture book with a spare and clever text combined with Helen Oxenbury’s superlatively comic pictures and mood-filled landscapes.
