A Brave Bear

Author: Sean Taylor
Illustrator: Emily Hughes
Publisher: Walker

A small bear leads the way having suggested to dad that it would be a good idea to go to the river on a very hot day. Dad encourages his offspring’s independence whilst keeping close enough for help and protection when necessary. Their journey is delineated in words and pictures as they travel through terrain covered with grass and bushes and jump from rock to rock until they reach their destination.

Emily Hughes’ illustrations convey the baking heat and the detail of the landscape with the loving relationship of parent and child at the centre of it. The narrative is from the viewpoint of the bear child whose gender identity is not specified.
