Bears in the Night

Author: Stan and Jan Berenstain
Publisher: HarperCollins

This circular tale of a journey up Spook Hill in the middle of the night demonstrates how it is possible to use a minimal text and still tell an interesting and amusing story. The text consists entirely of repeated phrases with the pattern of preposition, definite article, noun: ‘Around the lake/Between the rocks/Through the woods’. This strong shape makes this a good book for confidence-building in a beginner reader, and also leads to discussion about how it is constructed.
