A unique collaboration: CLPE and author Alex Johnson

We are delighted to share with you CLPE's latest project, written in collaboration with author Alex Johnson: How to Give Your Child a Lifelong Love of Reading published by the British Library.

Bringing together insights from a range of prominent children's writers including Jacqueline Wilson, Abi Elphinstone, Cressida Cowell, Hollie McNish, Ken Wilson-Max, and CLPE patrons Michael Rosen and Julia Eccleshare, the brand new publication provides a range of age-appropriate book suggestions and ideas to encourage reading for pleasure in children. It explores a range of key topics including: how to get children started on reading; how to encourage curiosity and ways to guide reading choices while maintaining interest.

CLPE's carefully curated booklists are also featured as key tools helping choose quality books for primary readers.

"What makes the book special is that it's not just one person offering their advice and experience. It's been a very collaborative approach from the very start, with some of the country's finest writers for children talking about the importance of reading and offering their suggestions. For me, what makes it truly stand out is that the reading lists have been put together by the hugely knowledgeable CLPE team who are all genuine experts in children's books. These provide a backbone to the hints and tips, a solid but approachable reference section that has been tried and tested."  - Alex Johnson, author.

Charlotte Hacking, Learning Programme Leader, who worked with Alex on the book, comments:

"Our years of research into effective Literacy Development at the CLPE have shown how important it is to encourage children to read widely and often. The combination of the right book, for the right child at the right time is key to developing children’s enthusiasm to read for pleasure. We hope the booklists provided for this book showcase what a range and breath of quality children’s literature could look like and that these support parents, carers and anyone working with children and young people to foster a love of literature that could be life-changing."
