Celebrating World Book Day 2020!

Schools all around the country marked World Book Day on 5th March 2020. World Book Day is the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and observed in over 100 countries across the world.

At CLPE, we were delighted to have celebrations of our own in our purpose-built Literacy Library with Year 4 and 5 classes from St John's Walworth CofE School, London! The children were welcomed by CEO Louise Johns-Shepherd and our Primary Advisory teachers, and had the chance to browse a selection of our 23,000 children's books to inspire their reading choices.

To celebrate the day, CLPE lined up a series of activities to inspire and celebrate literacy in all its forms including an expert-led illustration session with author-illustrator Viviane Schwarz. Viv has created a range of notable picturebooks including How to Find Gold (Power of Reading); There are Cats in this Book and Is there a Dog in this Book? (Power of Pictures). The latter was read aloud to the children, followed by a live-drawing workshop by Viv which gave children the chance to understand how to create their own characters.

Primary Advisory teacher, Darren Matthews also staged a wonderfully moving story-telling session, sharing a traditional tale from Zambia to tie into 2020's World Book Day campaign to 'Share a Million Stories'.

A wonderful day, leaving all feeling inspired. Thank you St John's!
